With @victor_peressetchensky and @seashepherdfrance we witnessed the killing of around 100 pilot whales in the Faroe Islands, the autonomous province of Denmark. These ultra-social and very gentle animals are protected by the Bern Convention on Wildlife. The Faroese eat dolphin meat and defend a tradition called "Grindadrap", which allowed their ancestors to survive in a hostile climate. Today, their supermarkets are full of food of all kinds, the population does not lack anything, but the dolphin hunting persists anyway. On average, 800 cetaceans are killed each year in the Faroe Islands. A few days ago, I plunged alongside @guillaumenery with pilot whales in the Mediterranean...They had been so curious, so welcoming. I just had the most epic helicopter ride of my life thanks to the man @bradleyfriesen who landed perfectly on this rock overlooking this incredible lake. Of course, I had my laptop with me, testing out the new @stockstotrade software, but swipe right to see some of the crazy piloting skills Brad has and realize 3 things - 1.) you can do extraordinary things once you dedicate years/decade to your craft, as Brad has 27 years of experience so he can do things that newbie pilots can’t, no different than how second nature stock trading is to me now after 21 years in the market 2.) the world is SUCH an incredible place, you owe it to yourself to get out and explore more as it’s not just about luxury, Mother Nature is breathtaking/awe-inspiring and 3.) sadly, we need to do a MUCH better job protecting our planet as there are many serious issues like the wildfires burning all over the world right now, decimating our precious forests that produce oxygen and protect us from climate change. And there are also still wildfires burning in Siberia, Indonesia, Alaska and in so many more forests all over the world. The one piece of good news is that thanks to this crisis going viral on social media and finally being featured in the press, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been forced to cave to international pressure and has deployed 44,000 troops from the country’s military to fight the Amazon fires. Unfortunately, he’s not announcing any concrete measures to fight deforestation and has actually worked to roll back federal rainforest protections in pursuit of a pro-business agenda, and has been openly dismissive of the rights of the peoples who live inside the forest. The future of Brazil and of life everywhere on the planet is being destroyed as too many people sit back and do nothing! Our forests, which are vital in keeping our climate stable and producing oxygen for us to breathe, are being destroyed faster than at any other time in history. We"re already in a #climateemergency so we cannot afford to make the situation any worse! The fires that are devastating the Amazon are also destroying Brazil"s image internationally. Even the agribusiness sectors are already admitting that the government"s anti-environmental policies can bring economic damage. Repost from @savethereef You might be tempted to laugh at this video of a walrus doing sit-ups for a crowd of tourists until you consider the harsh training required to make this keystone species in Arctic marine ecosystems do the sit-ups as trainers withhold their food until the trick is performed for the paying public. What’s even sadder is that the Pacific walrus population is estimated to have dropped 60% in the last few decades and research shows they are very sociable, interacting with each other more than any other type of animal! So, now look at this video in a different light as this borderline endangered species is forced to perform simply in order to eat, all alone and cutoff from other walruses, which is completely the opposite of how this beautiful creature would normally live out in the wild. Repost from @savethereef For the past decade, people in China have been keeping live fish, turtles and other amphibians as souvenirs on their keychains. These plastic bag charms are sold for $1-2 each and there’s just enough oxygen and nutrients in the bag to allow the animal to survive for a short time and then when the animals die a few days later, these charms are then simply thrown away in the trash. What’s sad is that China actually does have a Wild Animal Protection Law, But these animals are not wild and thus fall outside the scope of the law. Repost from @karmagawa WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES Detroit police officers shot and killed a poor dog while arresting his owner on two felony warrants for aggravated assault and domestic violence. The cops tasered the dog’s owner twice, but the tasers do not seem to affect him until he lets go of the leash at which point the dog barks at the police officers and they shot him 7 times with a taser. The police claim the dog was “coming towards the officer aggressively”, but to us it looks like the dog was just barking, protecting its owner and then trying to run away while he got shot. What do you think? We hate posting videos like this, but we MUST each do our part to share them to help prevent situations like from happening again and make police officers think twice before hurting innocent animals like this. Repost from @karmagawa WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES This is what the tragic rhino poaching crisis looks like as a starving one month-old baby rhino was recently filmed trying to suckle some milk from her dead mother who had been killed earlier by poachers for her horn. Usually the poachers kill the baby too despite them not having horns because they disturb the process of hacking off the parent’s horns as they cling to their parent...at least in this case the baby, who was named Lottie, survived. This horrific image of a pilot whale that had its tail mostly chopped off by a boat propeller off the coast of the Canary Islands should be a wake up call. Our marine life and oceans are suffering due to our carelessness and greed - we MUST CHANGE or face catastrophic consequences all within the next few years. Was this whale hit by a ship, a ferry or a pleasure boat? We will never know, but we have seen too many boats traveling at high speed through sensitive wildlife corridors. Only three people were there to hear the shrilling calls of pain and fear of this young whale. The photographer, the marine biologist and the wildlife veterinarian who were called to the scene were not able to help an animal with such a severe injury. All they could do was pull it out of the water and, with the kind of sorrow that can only be understood by people with enough empathy to do what they had to do, sedated it until it died. Sparing more unnecessary suffering to an animal with no chance of recovery was what they had to do. What the rest of us need to do is to become more engaged and care for our wildlife, oceans and limits is very difficult but it all begins with awareness and public pressure; the kind that demands that the voices of millions of people are heard. As angry and sad as this photo makes us, we are also extremely motivated to do something about it. We hope our @savethereef documentary inspires people around the world to treat our marine ecosystem better and to take action to push for laws that prevent this kind of tragedy from happening in the future. In 2018, an investigation uncovered that nearly 4,000 giraffe-derived trophies were imported in the U.S. over the last decade. She told CBS News that she made decorative pillows and a gun case out of the giraffe and she also ate some of its meat. She has shown absolutely no remorse for killing this beautiful creature. Hunting a giraffe is legal in South Africa if it has been pre-arranged with a game park. However, this story raises questions about giraffes being killed for trophies, especially given that there are less than 100,000 on the planet, and their population has decreased 40% in just the last 30 years. The controversial business of trophy hunting, in which hunters pay for permission to shoot rare animals, raises large amounts of money And it is often justified with claims about the funds being raised from hunters being put back into animal conservation. It’s absolutely disgusting that 2 fishermen recorded and laughed as another cuts off the tail (caudal fin) of what looks like a Greenland Shark. One of the fisherman can be heard yelling “Good luck trying to swim, you bastard” while the other laughs as the mutilated #shark tries to escape. Greenland sharks are the longest living vertebrates on Earth, living between 300-500 years and are believed to have unique genes that could hold the secret to long life for us humans too. Unfortunately, they don’t reach breeding age until 150 years so their population is very low even without humans condemning them to death by cutting off their fins like you see in this video. It’s also speculated that their population is low because this shark species is fished for its liver oil in the Scandinavian region. Thankfully, these men were promptly fired from their jobs on board and it also seems that the men broke several laws and could face up to a million ISK (roughly $8,000) in fines on animal cruelty charges…but hardly enough for this horrific act that shows what we are doing to sharks all over the world which must be stopped through all of us spreading awareness that we won’t tolerate this kind of behavior anymore! Disclaimer: осторожно, дальше идут домыслы, догадки, размышления, личные мнения, и прочая информация, проверенная чуть менее чем никак. И тем не менее…Про Тима Сайкса писали в журналах, его показывали по телевидению; он, под псевдонимом «The Start-up», снимался даже в небезызвестном реалити-сериале «Воины Уолл-Стрит », в роли самого себя — дневного трейдера , владельца хедж-фонда, спортсмена, комсомольца, да и просто умного парня, превратившего на бирже свои 12 тысяч долларов из «накоплений на бар-мицву» в более чем полтора миллиона.
Досмотрев «Воинов Уолл-Стрит», я немного побродил по сайтам Тима, почитал его историю в википедии, немного подумал… И у меня возникло впечатление, что «святой Грааль» Тима не так уж и сложно расшифровать.
Краткое введение в тимологию
Возьмём самый удачный период Тима, 2003-2006 года. Рынок на подъёме, акции растут, хедж-фонды привлекают деньги воодушевлённых вкладчиков. Тим, как и любой гений, заметно выделяется на общем фонде: с одной стороны, он, казалось бы, игнорирует позитивный настрой рынка — его специализацией являются short-сделки . Тим осознаёт некоторую «непатриотичность» своего подхода — каждая short-сделка подразумевает, что Тим считает, что состояние акций компании, с которой он работает, ухудшится; но тем не менее, именно такова специализация хедж-фонда Тима. Зачем? Почему Тим предпочитает играть в short, если это более рискованно и потенциально менее прибыльно (ведь при игре в long , риск ограничен стоимостью акций, а потенциальная прибыль не ограничена; при игре в short всё ровно наоборот)?
Более того, Тим работает не с «голубыми фишками» , не со «вторым эшелоном», а с самым «мусором» американских бирж — penny stocks, акциями со стоимостью в один или несколько долларов за штуку, или меньше. Это тоже часть стратегии Тима; в фильме он рассказывает, что, с одной стороны, такими акциями занимается слишком много неграмотных инвесторов, и человек с интеллектом будет чувствовать себя на этом поле достаточно комфортно и безопасно; с другой стороны, подобные мусорные акции, ввиду малой капитализации фирм, особо подвержены ажиотажу и манипуляциям при новостях и слухах. И именно этот ажиотаж Тим и отыгрывает — когда он считает, что акции переоценены по необъективным причинам, он и проводит short-сделку в расчёте на то, что ажиотаж утихнет, и стоимость акций упадёт. Но как узнать, вызван ли рост цены ажиотажем или объективным улучшением ситуации фирмы? Что если цена такой мусорной акции подскочила, но больше падать не будет? Ведь тогда можно остаться при кучке никому не нужных акций вместо денег.
Какая ещё информация у нас есть? Можно, например, вспомнить, что в фильме Тим испытывает проблемы со своей стратегией, когда рынок на спаде, и его дела налаживаются, напротив, когда рынок опять на подъёме. Но ведь, казалось бы, методика Тима как раз заключается в игре на падение!
Итак, повторим ещё раз, что у нас есть:
- «Мусорные» акции сильно подвержены ажиотажу.
- На «мусорных» акциях слишком много неквалифицированных инвесторов. Этими словами Тим неявно признаёт, что именно их он будет обыгрывать своими действиями. Деньги именно неопытных игроков — основная цель Тима.
- Стратегия лучше работает при поднимающемся рынке и хуже — при падающем.
- Продажа (точнее, именно игра в short — продажа акций даже несмотря на то, что их у тебя нет) на пике ажиотажа. Хотя в некоторых источниках и говорится, что Тим время от времени ловил волну ажиотажа ещё на подъёме и покупал акции ещё на низкой цене, затем на вершине «переворачивался», вставал в short на высокой цене, и затем закрывал сделку опять на низкой; но в фильме «шортовая» суть стратегии явно акцентируется.
Есть ли что-нибудь, что дополнит имеющийся список до связной и целостной картины, и закроет все поднятые вопросы? По правилу Оккама, оно должно быть максимально просто и компактно. Есть какие-нибудь предположения, кроме того, которое возникло у меня?..
Как проехать к Граалю?
- Спам.
Как помнят многие владельцы почтовых ящиков тех лет, в то время приходило просто невероятное количество так называемого «stock spam»-а — спама с информацией об акциях всевозможных мелких компаний, которые «в ближайшее время получат крупный грант правительства», «находятся на пороге открытия нового источника энергии» и тому подобное. И разумеется, согласно спаму, в буквально ближайшие дни стоимость акций этой компании взлетит до небес, и надо срочно покупать эти акции, пока не поздно, и тогда вы точно разбогатеете, и будет вам счастье. В полном соответствии с описанием схемы pump and dump , инвестор, послушавшийся доброго совета неведомого знатока, в самое ближайшее время потеряет заметную сумму денег. Организаторы же подобного спама, ещё до рассылки купив по дешёвке акции этой компании, дождутся реакции поверивших лопухов, вкладывающих свои деньги в эту компанию (но уже после спамеров), повышающих эти стоимость акций… до того уровня, пока спамеры не решат, что акции стоят уже достаточно много; после этого организаторы продадут свой крупный пакет, получив на этом надуманном росте цены максимум прибыли, и опять уронив цену акций.
Какую роль в схеме «pump and dump» играют мусорные акции? А простую. Как говорил сам Тим, они наиболее подвержены ажиотажу. Несколько относительно крупных даже частных покупателей, набежав на акции мелкой фирмёшки, могут поднять их стоимость вполне заметно. А продавцы — так же заметно уронить. На дорогих акциях известных, с огромными торгующимися объёмами, влияние таких отдельных покупателей окажется просто незаметным, ничтожным по сравнению с потоками денег от крупных банков, фондов, множества трейдеров.
При чём тут неквалифицированные инвесторы? А именно при том же. Опытный игрок на бирже не поведётся на подобную разводку от «неизвестных доброжелателей». Опытный игрок проведёт доскональный анализ положения дел фирмы и оценит её реальное положение дел. Неопытный же склонен безоглядно доверять мнению того, кого он посчитает более опытным.
Как связана эта стратегия и рост или падение рынка? Тоже достаточно очевидно. Именно в период подъёма рынка, когда по всем каналам рекламируют, как быстро и бодро растут акции, много неопытного народа и решает начать управлять своими финансами самостоятельно, играть на бирже, инвестировать и спекулировать… И реклама вокруг поддакивает, что вот, эти акции взлетели за день на 50%, эти — на 30%… а если бы вы вложили в вон ту компанию три года назад $10 000, то сейчас у вас был бы миллион.
А миллион-то хочется, и побыстрее, и, желательно, не вдаваясь в скучные теханализы и фундаментальные показатели. Stock spam бьёт точно в цель, выходя именно на новичков на бирже и обещая им то, что они ищут. А с ростом рынка количество таких новичков как раз увеличивается…
Не можешь начать — присоединись
Нет, я ни в коей мере не считаю, что Тим организовывал подобные спам-рассылки и занимался pump and dump. Он слишком умный мальчик, чтобы так подставляться. Зачем что-то организовывать самому, если другие мошенники сами шлют такой спам? Рынок-то открытый, и к любому движению можно присоединиться в любой момент.
Логика неимоверно проста. На stock spam-е наживаются организаторы, покупающие акции до рассылки спама и продаюшие через некоторое время после . Большинство олухов, поверивших спаму и купивших акции после чтения рассылки, потеряют деньги. Из соображений симметрии — что должен сделать хоть чуточку благоразумный и понимающий рынок человек, после того, как он узнает про схему stock spam-а и получит соответствующее письмо с советом покупать какую-то акцию?..
По-моему, для ответа на этот вопрос высшего экономического образования не требуется.
Жизнь после полутора миллионов
Ну ладно, вернёмся к Тиму. В мире тем временем происходят события. На stock spam таки стали обращать всё больше и больше внимания, и за дело постепенно взялся SEC . Несколько громких процессов с организаторами такого спама постепенно уменьшили его количество в наших ящиках и, возможно, спасли сотни и тысячи рыночных новичков от разорения. Впрочем, если у Тима есть серьёзная и фундаментальная база, это не помешает ему продолжать расти и развиваться — ведь больше ничего не изменилось, рынок по-прежнему растёт, penny stock-ов полно, они, как и прежде, легко реагируют на шумиху и сплетни, и опытный трейдер легко отличит искусственно вздутую цену от реальной стоимости акции, не так ли?
В 2006-ом и 2007-ом году Тим Сайкс сливает около трети своего капитала, зачем-то решив сойти с проверенной дорожки (шорты и мусорные акции) и переориентироваться на инвестиции.
Не можешь присоединиться — …?
2008-ой и 2009-ый год — это не только годы тяжёлого кризиса и затем неожиданного отскока и роста (который, как обычно, привлёк на рынки очередную «молодёжь», понадеявшуюся «купить на дне»). Это, как бы это ни было неожиданно, победоносное возвращение Тима Сайкса. Он снова в силе, он снова играет на penny stocks, он снова увлекается short-ами, у него уже больше 500% прибыли с конца 2007-го года. Это чудо, как этому гению удалось так быстро подняться — ведь даже если предположить, что когда-то Тим присоединялся в сделках к организаторам stock spam-а, сейчас-то такого спама почти нет?...
Сейчас Тим уже широко известен как опытный и высокоэффективный трейдер. 12 тысяч долларов из накоплений на бар-мицву уже вошли в легенду, у него много поклонников и учеников, которые хотели бы играть на рынке так же хорошо, как и он. Тимоти: Я уверен в техническом анализе только потому, что другие трейдеры его делают. Тимоти: После пробного периода, когда они добиваются последовательной прибыли, многие начинающие трейдеры стремятся максимально использовать кредитные рычаги, так как хотят делать «большие деньги» настолько быстро, насколько только возможно, особенно, учитывая огромное количество «волшебных торговых систем», гарантирующих надежную прибыль – каждая из которых, естественно, стоит несколько сотен или тысяч долларов!
Вопрос: Какой совет вы бы дали человеку, только сейчас начинающему торговать на рынках?
Тимоти: Я посоветовал бы ему для начала прочитать максимально возможное количество книг, прежде чем ставить реальные деньги или даже попытаться понять торговлю через специализированные сайты. Читайте классику, вроде «Воспоминания фондового оператора», «Как я сделал 2 миллиона на фондовой бирже», если вы хотите быть трейдером.
Этот бизнес полон обезумевших игроков, ничем не отличающихся от тех, кто ставит последние деньги в казино. Тимоти: Во-первых, я не торгую каждый день. Во-вторых, моя подготовка не начинается в начале дня, а еще с предшествующего вечера. Когда рынок открывается, я уже провел 1,2,3 или 4 часа предыдущей ночью или рано утром, просмотрев всю фундаментальную (еще раз повторюсь, что акции, которыми я торгую, не имеют экономической базы как таковой, поэтому моя цель выяснить, сколько игроков вовлечено в этот рынок) и техническую картину для всех моих потенциальных сделках.

Тимоти: Я смотрю на силу торговой установки. Идеально, если объем повышается в несколько раз от нескольких сотен тысяч до нескольких миллионов акций в течение 2-3 дней, потому что возникает высокая вероятность быстрого разворота. Я люблю короткие позиции на подобных рынках.
У меня нет никаких предпочтений относительно сектора рынка, за исключением только резких движений в результате действительно значащих событий, вроде одобрения FDA, высокого дохода или крупного контракта.
